Deanna Troust is a seasoned communications strategist who has devoted most of her career to strengthening organizations and fostering social change. Over her 18-year tenure at Vanguard Communications, she managed complex projects for nonprofit, association, and government clients with special focus on planning, earned and shared media strategy, branding, multicultural outreach, marketing, and creative development. Her efforts have built thought leadership, seeded new ideas for improving systems, and engaged communities through award-winning, culturally competent outreach efforts. In March 2016 Deanna established her own business, 3 Stories Communications LLC, and now consults for clients such as Conservation International, Cook Ross, International Women’s Media Foundation, LearnBIG, National Institutes of Diabetes, Digestive Disorders and Kidney Disease, and more.
As a senior vice president at Vanguard, Deanna served on the firm’s leadership team for over a decade. She led its energy and environment practice, working with clients such as DC Sustainable Energy Utility, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.N. Environment Programme, and the nonprofit Galvin Electricity Initiative, whose communications she managed for 6 years. She designed countless strategic communications analysis and planning projects that helped brands such as RTI International, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Ocean Leadership, and GLAD update their communications operations and strengthen their voices. She specializes in helping organizations develop current staff and was a valued mentor among team and colleagues at Vanguard. Deanna is well versed in the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and has led many projects focused on eliminating health and economic disparities that affect American Indian/Alaskan Native, Latino, and other underserved communities. Clients include the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Equal Measure, U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products, U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and First Nations Development Institute. Deanna led Vanguard’s Creative Services department for many years and handled VIPs from the business, Hollywood, music, and government sectors for events such as Farm Aid and the Voice Awards. Prior to Vanguard, Deanna worked in marketing and advertising for US Airways, MCI WorldCom, and Cambridge Energy Research Associates. She is a graduate of Cornell University. In her free time, she is a board member of PAVE (Parents Amplifying Voices in Education), DC International School and DCI’s PTO, and advocates for the press and for better energy, education, and workplace solutions in her home community of Washington, DC.
